Does our independence day represents real independence?
The Day that we call the independence of India is no more than British leaving India after making all efforts to make it no better than a rubble. India was divided and a lot of people were forced to leave the land of their forefathers in the name of religion and our intelligent leaders did sign the partition pact as a "protest" to the partition.
I would like to ask the question how an independent society look like? What type of law and order we adopt? Are we free from poverty? are we free to take decision for our country? Are we free of the red tapism, which was a money making machine to British rulers? Are we free of humiliation and torture at the Government offices? Are we brave enough, if we are not lawbrakers, to go to any police station to get help? Can we ask question to police officer and our leaders? Can we think of getting work done in a government offices without bribe? if the answer to any of the above is NO, that means we have not attained Independence that we need.
After British left India, our leaders started to take work from the 'Raj" trained babus. They never thought ever to change the laws made by the british. This is evident by the various laws 100 to 200 years old and either never changed or slightly changed. Our leaders learned all the bad habbits of British rulers like favouring one or the other at a cost. They were more concerned for their image than anything else.
The Lokpal Bill in India
For quite sometime there is struggle going on for Lokpal in India, Lokpal means kind of auditor to the government work. Anna Hazare is proposing an Independent lokpal with CBI as its investigating agency. At present CBI is under the contorl of Central Government. There is a long history of (mis)using this agency for ruler's benifit and controlling the opposition.
Neither the Government not the opposition wants this agency to let go as both sides are equally corrupt. Some MP's says that they can not be pressurised and it is up to them to make laws. It clearly means no one can pressurise them to work and at least work honestly. What is the need of agitation if the government is working properly.
Also if the Ministers think that they are clean then why they are afraid of loosing control of CBI? In my opinion there should be at least one investigating agency which should be under the control of an independent agency like chief Justice or President. These agencies should also be empowered to publish their results in national news paper.
What should public do ? There is no provision in the Indian Politics where public can choose not to elect anyone. Then what should public do? There should be a provision where the Election Commisioner should publish all the vital details of the political candidates three months before election or this may be covered under the right of information where the vital details must be provided to the person who belongs to the electoral riding of the candidate. These vital details MUST contain all the police cases against candidate, his last income tax paid, his education, hobbies, business etc. etc.
Lokpal bill is just a start, India needs full political reform because as I said earlier nothing has changed, except corruption, since British left India.
